A file extension is the suffix at the end of a file name. They are usually three characters in length but can be anywhere from one to five characters in length. They enable the operating system to know what kind of files they are dealing with so that they can automatically open or edit these files. File extension IMG refers to Macintosh Disk Image. This is a type of disk file, which resides on the hard drive. The computer however identifies this file as a disc or hard disc when it is mounted which can be done like an optical disk such as a CD or DVD.

Mac OS 9 and earlier versions of Mac OS used this type of files but they have now been replaced by the DMG disk format in Mac OS X. The programs that open IMG files in Mac OS include Apple Desk Utility, Roxio Toast and for Mac OS Classic there is Apple Disk Copy and Aladdin ShrinkWrap. Using disk image allows one to create a disk that is compressed and virtual and which can be used by other Mac OS users on their desktop.
